PRODUCT QUESTIONS

ANODIZE QUESTIONS

Why do your aluminum components exhibit shade variation in their anodizing finish?
As all our colors, besides Quicksand, are finished via the anodizing process, there may be a variation in shade. This variation is the culmination of several factors to include:

  • Differing batches
  • Geometry (size and shape) of the item
  • Slight metallurgy differences in the raw alloy

“Earthy” colors, such as browns, tans, grays, and greens, are far more susceptible to shade variations across batches and the geometry of the component. We do not consider shade variations to be a defect in our products, and do not offer returns or exchanges based purely on shade variation.

  • As of January 2024, all Quicksand products were transitioned to a Cerakote finish.
  • When purchasing a complete rifle from TacSol, we make every effort to match the components as closely as possible based on our current inventory.
  • We cannot, however, guarantee the color matching of components purchased from multiple sources or at different times.

BARREL QUESTIONS

What makes TacSol barrels better than others?
TacSol stands as a trailblazer in the lightweight barrel sector. Starting in 2002 with our original PAC-LITE™ barrel upgrade for the Ruger Mark® series, are barrels are renowned across the world for their lightweight, accurate, and dependable performance. Over the years, we’ve made improvements and additions to our barrel lineup to include 1/2x28 muzzle threads as standard, flutes in various patterns, improved shank durability, and integrally silenced barrels, as well as other novel product variations allowing users to customize their rimfire rifles to meet their specific needs.

While a number of companies have attempted to replicate our products, none have matched the consistent reliability, accuracy, and dependability of our barrels.

Are TacSol barrels difficult to install?
Installation of our barrels is designed to be intuitive and straightforward. As we are unable to match tolerances with every other possible product on the market, some fitting work may be required for some of our barrels to your receiver, stock, or frame.

For added convenience, we provide comprehensive "how-to" installation videos available online for most of our products. These videos serve as a helpful guide, ensuring a seamless installation process for our customers.

What is your recommended barrel break-in?
We recommend cleaning the barrel before its first use with a one-piece cleaning rod sized appropriately for the bore diameter, a high-quality bore cleaning solvent, a properly fitting patch/jag combination, and either a nylon or bronze brush. Always clean the barrel from the breech/chamber end to avoid damaging the crown as the patch or brush exits the muzzle.

Once the initial cleaning is completed, the barrel is ready for use without any additional break-in steps required. After each use, we suggest cleaning the barrel and applying a light coat of oil to the bore to prevent rust or corrosion during storage.

What twist rate do you use in your barrels?
All our 22LR barrels feature a SAAMI Sporting Spec chamber, 1:16 twist rate, and 11-degree target crown.

All our 22WMR and 17HMR barrels feature a 1:14 twist rate and 11-degree target crown.

What size muzzle threads do your barrels come with?
Each of our threaded barrels features a standardized threading of 1/2” X 28 with a .400” thread depth ensuring compatibility with most muzzle devices and silencers available on the market.

Can I order a barrel without a threaded end?
All our barrels are threaded with a 1/2x28 muzzle thread as standard. If you require a non-threaded barrel due to your state’s restrictions, we can permanently affix the thread protector for an additional $30 charge. If desired, you may also purchase a compensator and we can permanently affix that in place of the thread protector.

If you already own a TacSol barrel that’s threaded, you may send it in after receiving an RA to have us permanently attach the end cap or purchased TacSol compensator to the muzzle for a $45 charge, return shipping included.

  • We will not pin any muzzle device not manufactured by TacSol.
  • Please visit our Support Page for more information about obtaining an RA.

AMMO QUESTIONS

What .22LR ammunition do you recommend for your products?
In general, we recommend CCI Mini Mag , Blazer, and Standard Velocity 40gr Round Nose ammunition for best reliability and accuracy. For shooters looking to tighten groups, there are many excellent match loadings available, to include those from Lapua, Eley, SK, RWS, and Norma.

If subsonic ammunition is desired, understand that a certain amount of energy is required to operate a direct blowback style firearm, such as all our semiautomatic firearms and receivers. In general, a rule of thumb to follow is the slower the round, the heavier the bullet should be. Think Newton’s Third Law!

Based on the velocity (in feet per second) listed on the loading’s cartridge box or manufacturer's website

  • 40gr Ammunition = No less than 1,000 f/s
  • 42gr Ammunition = No less than 925 f/s
  • 45gr Ammunition = No less than 850 f/s

Please note that this is a general rule of thumb, and the particulars of each cartridge loading, such as bullet shape and lubricant used for the casing may negatively impact the performance relative to an otherwise “similar” load.

Can I shoot “Hyper Velocity” .22LR ammunition in my TacSol product?
TacSol strongly advises against the use of “Hyper Velocity” 22LR ammunition, which is any 22LR loading that exceeds 1400 feet per second. The use of Hyper Velocity ammunition can lead to a premature extraction of a case before the chamber pressures have been allowed to subside, causing a case head separation/rupture. This event is extremely dangerous and can cause significant damage to your firearm and / or injuries to your person. Examples of “Hyper Velocity” ammunition included, but are not limited to:

  • CCI Stingers / “Stangers”
  • CCI Velocitor
  • CCI Copper 22
  • Aguila® SuperMaximum
  • Aguila® Interceptor

RIFLE & RECEIVER QUESTIONS

What is the difference between the X-RING, X-RING VR, and X-RING VR GEN 2 receivers?
The TacSol X-RING was our original replacement 10/22®-pattern receiver that featured the innovative and ultra-reliable dual recoil spring bolt system and integrally machined 15 MOA Picatinny Rail. Instead of a forged casting, our X-RING receivers have been precision machined from 6061 billet aluminum right here in our Boise, Idaho facility.

In 2018, we transitioned to the X-RING VR (Versatile Receiver) style, which added the left-hand charging handle functionality.

In 2025, we released the significantly improved and modernized X-RING VR GEN 2, which features several reliability enhancements, to include

  • X-RING G2 Bolt with improved extractor region geometry, increased travel distance, and a stronger, more ergonomic charging handle
  • Rounded ejection port edges to reduce stovepipes
  • Left hand side cover plate to reduce debris intrusion into the receiver

Additionally, the X-RING VR GEN 2 introduces the X-RING Modular Rails System, or MRS, which allows the end user to choose from a plethora of optic rail and mount options for the top of their receiver.

While the X-RING VR and X-RING VR GEN 2 receivers allow for ambidextrous manipulation of the bolt, all X-RING receivers manufactured are right-hand ejection only.

Do your X-RING VR Receivers / Rifles feature a last round bolt hold open?
Unfortunately, our X-RING VR Receivers do not feature a last round bolt hold open, as this would require substantial modifications to the trigger group and require purpose-built, proprietary magazines to function with such a feature. Rotary magazines do not have a follower to push up on a lever to lock the bolt to the rear, as is the case with traditional style magazines.
